Stronger Than Cancer: My Mom's 21-Week Fight
From Diagnosis to Defiance: Here are the lessons learned.
In late August of 2024, my family was all together enjoying the weekend sun that the city of St. George had to offer. As we woke up that Saturday morning, my dad gathered us all together.
Although abnormal, this meeting was not unusual. My dad often enjoyed sharing information with our family in a group setting. This time (with heavy emotions) he said that life is about to get more real than it ever has.
As I looked to my mom’s tear filled eyes she said, “I have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.”
Here are the lessons my mom has taught me, 21 weeks later:
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, our world was turned upside down. The road ahead was uncertain, and the challenges were daunting.
Yet, she embarked on her journey with courage and positivity that left us all in awe.
After 21 weeks of grueling chemotherapy, she emerged stronger than ever—not just as a survivor but as an inspiration to everyone who knows her.
What made her journey so remarkable wasn’t just her resilience in the face of cancer. It was her unwavering positivity and her willingness to serve others, even during her darkest moments.
Here is the story of my mom.
A Heart Full of Gratitude
Chemotherapy is no easy feat. For my mom, it meant a relentless cycle of treatment every Friday, followed by days of recovery. She would feel okay for two days, terrible for the next two, and then progressively better—just in time for the next round of chemo. Despite this, she never gave up.
Instead of focusing on her pain, she channeled her energy into expressing gratitude. She wrote heartfelt thank-you letters to everyone who brought dinners, gifts, and support. She didn’t let the enormity of her trial overshadow the kindness she received. Her gratitude became a beacon of light, reminding me of the importance of appreciating even the smallest gestures of love.
Embracing the Journey
One of the most challenging moments for my mom was cutting her hair. Losing her hair to chemotherapy was a stark reminder of the battle she was fighting. Yet, she chose to own it. She didn’t hide behind hats or beanies; instead, she embraced her new look with confidence.
By leaving her head uncovered, she showed the world—and herself—that she was unafraid to face the cards she had been dealt. Her boldness was a lesson in self-acceptance, a reminder that our strength comes not from hiding our struggles but from confronting them head-on.
Lessons in Resilience
Watching my mom endure 21 weeks of chemotherapy taught me lessons I’ll carry for the rest of my life. I learned that even life’s hardest challenges can be overcome with hope, determination, and love. I saw how important it is to never lose sight of the things that truly matter—family, health, and moments of connection.
During her treatment, our family grew closer than ever. We rallied around her, making sacrifices to support her every step of the way. From coordinating schedules to driving her to appointments, every small act became a thread in the fabric of our unity.
This experience reminded me that family should always be a top priority. Life is unpredictable, and time with loved ones is precious. My mom’s journey taught me to cherish every moment and to never take anything for granted.
The Power of Support
One of the most powerful takeaways from this experience is the importance of a strong support system. My mom’s strength was amplified by the love and encouragement she received from friends, family, and even strangers. Their acts of kindness—whether through meals, gifts, or simply listening—proved that we are never alone in our battles.
This realization has changed the way I approach life. It’s inspired me to prioritize my health, take care of the body I’ve been given, and always work towards bettering myself. I now believe that with the support of others, anything is possible.
Living with Purpose
As I reflect on these 21 weeks, I’m struck by how my mom’s journey has reshaped my perspective. It’s not just about overcoming cancer; it’s about embracing life with purpose, gratitude, and resilience.
My mom taught me to be present, to cherish the people around me, and to express love and appreciation whenever I can. Her strength has shown me that life’s greatest challenges are also opportunities for growth, connection, and gratitude.
A Legacy of Strength
Today, my mom stands as a testament to the power of determination and positivity. She didn’t just survive cancer—she defied it. Her journey is a reminder that we are stronger than we think, braver than we know, and more resilient than we can imagine.
As I write this, I am filled with gratitude. My mom’s story is one of triumph, not just over cancer but over fear, doubt, and adversity. It’s a story that will inspire me—and everyone who hears it—for years to come.
I love my mom.
